The Las Vegas Alliance of Black School Educators (LVABSE) was originally founded in the Las Vegas area by the late Herschel L. Williams. A group of Black educators in the Clark County School District (CCSD) gathered to discuss and address systemic racism within the school system.
In 2010, LVABSE was re-established in the memory and honor of Jennifer Rose Lee, who organized Black educators and staff members from a local school who experienced injustice. Meetings with local pastors turned into the rebirth of LVABSE. The re-establishing founders were Kamilah Bywaters, Thomas Bywaters, Anna J. Lee, Constance Geffinger-Clifton, Tracey Lewis, Leontyne Sloan, Carla Obiago and Mamie Divers.
LVABSE is an affiliate of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) which is the nation’s premiere non-profit organization devoted to furthering the academic success of the nation’s children, particularly children of African descent. The initiatives of NABSE and the current state of education in Nevada informs and guides the work of LVABSE.
Today, LVABSE is reevaluating its position within the educational community and society. LVABSE is developing avenues for its members to have a more hands on approach to sustainable change.
LVABSE is a coalition of educators, administrators, support staff, parents, students, and other stakeholders associated with any phase of the educational work or policy. Our goal is to work collectively to increase academic development and opportunity for all students, specifically those of African descent. We also seek to increase Black leadership within the educational field.
